Would it be possible to use this grid in a WPF/E (ergo non XBAP) setup?
Maybe by installing the DLL on the client end?

The Xceed DataGrid for WPF is not a WPF/E control and cannot be used in WPF/E “applications”.

    How come the documentation says

XBAP-friendly, CLS compliant, and uses no unsafe blocks. No special permissions are required, so it can run within the limited permission set granted to XBAP applications.

and the live explorer says that it is available as an xbap?

WPF/E is not the same thing as XBAP…

WPF/E is a web technology, somehow similar to flash, which uses a subset of XAML as its programming language.

XBAP is the full-blown Windows Presentation Framework, which is web-hosted but runs into a sandboxed environment onto your computer.
